A Brief History of WBC

BEGINS AT A STRATEGIC TIME

With the rapid development of Welling from a simple thoroughfare to a district housing 50,000 people in the 1930’s W.J.Stevens planned an estate north of the railway and he gifted the site for the erection of the present church. The church traces its beginning to 1935 when it first met in Belle Grove Road and subsequently in  a room above the co-operative store.

From the stone laying on October 1938 to the Opening in April 1939. With timely help from the disbursement of funds from the closure of Creek Street Mission Deptford and generous gifts from the church at Plumstead instructions were given to  the builder Mr Stevens with £2000 in hand. In September of that year Britain was at war with Germany-and the church became a shelter  and its members a resource and support for numerous families now resident on the edge of the new London overspill.
